A Secret Conversation with Grandma

(Loren and Grandma eating lunch at the hospital room.)

(I wrote this posting in Japanese first, so English version of this positing took a loooooong time to be written. Sorry. Finally, here it is.)

It’s been awhile since I posted my last posting.
I could not make time to update. I think this was the longest time I did not update my blog. There have been many things happened… I am doing fine, though.

Well, there are many things I want to write about, but I want to finish this story of our “adventure” with Grandma since I have written this far.

Okay, where was I? Oh yes, I ended the last story at the point where we finally found a nursing home for her.

Although we found one for her, we did not entirely feel ready to go back to Maui. We wanted to make sure that Grandma was fine in the process of being discharged from the hospital and moving into the nursing home, so we changed the date of flights.

On the day when Grandma was supposed to leave the hospital, she was busy getting ready to leave from the early morning. She tends to prepare herself way in advance. For example, if her doctor’s appointment is at 9 am, she is ready at least by 7:30 am, and she waits for an hour or so continuously asking people around her, “What time are we leaving?” Therefore, she gets tired even before she leaves the house, and people around her also get tired of answering her questions and looking at the clock. We tell her, “Don’t worry. We have a lot of time still.” “You don’t have to start to get ready yet, Grandma.” Yet, she seems fidgety and uneasy until she gets ready. In a way, I admire her for being on time always because I tend to do things until the very last minute and get ready for appointments hastily.

Although we told her that she would be discharged after lunch, she was perfectly ready around 10 am. Despite of us explaining to her numerous times that we had to wait for a discharge summary and permission from a doctor, she was tired of waiting and saying, “What are we waiting for? Let’s go.” While I appeased her by saying, “I know you want to leave soon. So do we. We will leave soon. Let’s wait a bit more,” Loren was busy getting all the necessary documents for the nursing home, medications, and so on. After all, we finally got permission from the hospital and also a welcome notice from the nursing home. Once again, I looked around the room where Grandma stayed for the past 4-5 days.

On the third night, I stayed overnight in her room. On that night, when we were about to leave her room to go home (Loren’s mom’s house), Grandma started to cry, imploring not to leave her alone. For the first and second nights, Loren’s mom stayed over to make sure that Grandma was fine. However, she could not sleep on the hospital’s hard portable bed anymore due to her back situation, and it was Grandma’s third night, so we figured that she could stay by herself. However, she did not let us go easily. Loren tried to sooth her, but she kept sobbing like a small child. The next moment, my mouth said, “I will stay with you tonight, Grandma” without really giving it a thought. I could not help it by looking at Grandma so sad and so scared because she had so many tests, seeing different doctors and nurses, being asked so many questions, being taken all the medications away, and not knowing where she was really. After Loren and his mom left, I borrowed one of Grandma’s pajamas and changed into it and lay down on the folding bed that the hospital prepared for me. It was pretty comfortable, but I understood that it was not the best bed after a couple of hours. I was right next to Grandma’s bed. With the light escaping from the hallway, I was unintentionally gazing the outline of Grandma’s body that was touching the air around her body. Each time she breathed in, the line rose up a little bit. “She is alive…” I quietly thought. From there, I started to ask questions in my heart as if I was speaking to Grandma’s soul. “Hi Grandma, it’s me, Akari. How are you doing?” Her soul seemed to be awake even when her body was in asleep and replied, “I am doing just fine.” I said, “There were many tests. You must be tired of all that.” Her soul answered, “Aha, but I am doing all right.” “You must be scared because there have been many strange tests, and you got confused about where you are and why you are here,” I expressed. Her soul said, “Well, that’s true, but a real ‘me’ is fine. On the surface level, I seem to be confounded, but real ‘me’ is actually made quite strong. Now is time to experience some suffering, but my real being is always doing fine, so do not worry about me.” The voice sounded really strong and steady, so I felt a bit better and felt like I could nicely fall in asleep. I told her, “Grandma, I am sorry that it is the way it is now. I am sorry that we could not take care of you at home any longer.” She replied, “What are you talking about? You did enough. You did plenty. I could not have asked more.” I requested her, “Grandma, don’t forget how much we love you, okay?” She quietly but firmly said back to me, “I know” and smiled gently as if to say, "That's so obvious. Why are you telling me that again?" Lastly, I said, “Good night, Grandma. See you tomorrow.” That was the end of our secret conversation that I had with her soul.

After that, she started to snore really loud, so I wanted to tell her soul, “Grandma, I cannot sleep! You need to snore more quietly.” But she did not answer anymore. I pushed my left ear against a pillow as I regretted that I did not have an ear plug handy. (My right ear is almost deaf, so if I cover my left ear, I barely hear with my right ear. It is quit convenient when I want some quietness; I only need to cover left ear.)

Her room that I glanced once more in the day light did not leave even a piece of trace of our conversation, but Grandma and I knew. We knew that we had a secret conversation between us.

と言うと、「I know.

A Challenging Flight

(Mountains covered with snow; seen from the airplane)

The flight to Wisconsin had three stops. With a time change, I imagine that it was not be easy for 84-year-old body with Parkinson's to endure all that. Loren reserved a first-class seat for Grandma and also reserved one more first-class seat and one economy-class seat. Loren and I exchanged our seats during flights to accompany Grandma. We used Northwest Airlines; unfortunately, we did not have a pleasant experience with them this time. Although we reserved first-class seats, the seats did not recline much, so Grandma could not lie down. The flight attendants seemed to be stressed out. Additionally, the flight attendants gave Grandma’s wheel chair to someone else. We had to wait in the aircraft until we got the wheel chair back. When a temporal wheel chair came, there was a strange rule that she could not get inside of the building with that particular chair, so she had to wait between the building and the aircraft for at least 5 minutes where it was snowing! Loren asked them to move her to somewhere at least warm, but they refused this request and blankly stated, “We cannot change the rule.” Loren and I were pretty upset about this, and they even did not apologize for this matter… Then, the flight from Minneapolis to Milwaukee was delayed three hours due to some sort of malfunction of the aircraft. In the end, they canceled the flight, and we had to get another flight. By the time we got it, we found out that the gate was so far away from where we were and was going to leave in 15 minutes! We had to run to the gate with Grandma on the wheelchair. Of course, we lost our first-class seats although we had paid for them, so Grandma had to sit in one of the economy seat. It was challenging for her to walk through the narrow isle and sit down.

Despite of all these difficulties, Grandma did well. I was impressed. I was exhausted by the time we had to run for 7 minutes form one gate to another, but she was in a good spirit and talked a lot. In the end, we landed in Wisconsin safe and sound.

The next day, Grandma was hospitalized. It was not because she got in an accident or was sick. She had to see a doctor in the region of a nursing home prior to the admission. While she was staying at a hospital, she saw two doctors who were specialized in Parkinson’s disease. These doctors wanted to try a new Parkinson’s medication on Grandma, so they took away her current medications. The result was not good. Grandma’s function level declined to 20%. She could not get out of a bed, could not feed herself, and could not use a bathroom on her own anymore. She kept sleeping a whole day. Loren solicited with the doctors to go back to the original medications and the original dosage. It took a couple of days to get ‘our’ Grandma back. Meanwhile, Loren was busy trying to find a nursing home that would accept her. He eagerly found right people to talk to, and a social worker and he spent hours on this matter. Many different kinds of formal documents were needed, and dense process was ahead of us. The day to return to Maui was approaching, but dealing with the doctors, finding a right nursing home for her, and dealing with paper work endlessly continued from the morning to the night. I respected Loren for his effort and love for Grandma. As Grandma was coming back to her normal function level, Loren finally found a nursing home that accepted her. There were countless people, including Loren’s family members, involved in this process and helped along the way. They were truly appreciated. In order to finalize the whole process to the point where Loren and I could feel safe enough to leave, we decided to extend our stay.

(Snowy weather in Wisconsin)

From Maui to Wisconsin

(Sunset view from 'Ulupalakua. This is one of my favorite photos I have taken.)

Loren decided to have Grandma staying at a nursing home in Wisconsin. He thought that it would be better than having her live in a nursing home on Maui where only Loren and I would visit. In Wisconsin, there are more family members to visit her. We used the spring break (in the middle of March) to help her move there. Grandma said, "I never thought I would get on a plane again."

Since the day we told her about this to the day we left Maui, we spent our time with more intention. Right after Loren told her about her moving to a nursing home, it seemed to take awhile for the news itself to sink in her memory. She sometimes forgot the fact that she was moving, so it was painful for us to remind her each time and go through the experience again. Sometimes, she started to cry and cried in the middle of night. One day, she was happy and excited about seeing her great grand children when she moves there. The next day, she was unhappy saying, "Loren must dislike me. That's why he is dumping me." I think that she was doing her very best to deal with this dramatic change that was about to happen to her. Loren and I took her out often to make good memories on Maui before she left. We took her to a live performance of an Irish band at Maui Art Cultural Center. She got excited, stood up from her wheel chair towards the end of the show and started to clap her hands. Other audience seeing her also did the same. Her sense of humor always entertained us.

March came. I was busy with the Praxis test, doing college assignments, going to the student teaching every day, preparing for Grandma to leave, dealing with caregivers, dealing with paper work, everyday chores, and so on that goes endless if I try to list them all. It was the same for Loren. We spent every day as if we could not waste even a minute. It was intense and insane. Because of that, I did not comprehend that she was moving away with a realistic view point although my brain knew that she was. The moment my heart understood what it meant to me was on the day we were leaving for Wisconsin. We packed up, loaded them up in our friend’s truck who took us to the airport, and I was checking every room in the house to make sure that we did not forget something important. Then, I saw her gently smiling and sitting on her wheel chair, crossing her leg over the other by her room door where she often stuck her head out to check on us. Her empty room was emphasized in the back of her. At that moment, I understood, “Ah, this is the last time I would ever see her in this house like this.” Then, all of sudden, tears welled up. I hurried up to hide from her and cried quietly.

It was not easy three and half years. Schedule of Loren and my days were decided based on her. We spent our free time for her care. There have been times when she mentioned something sour to us when her mind was not clear (which have become funny stories to us now). Loren woke up every single morning at 6 am to give her 6 am pills. There was no one day when he could sleep in. There was much stress, but one thing was clear. We loved her so much, and her love to us canceled all the stress out.

Days with Grandma

In the past four weeks, it seems as if a half year has passed, so I did not have time to write a blog. I have a bit more time to do so now, but as soon as I sit in front of a computer, I don't even know where to begin. My words are yet lost which also kept me from updating the blog. Eventually, however, the urge to write about my experiences won, so I pushed myself to start anywhere I could.

In the past three and half years, I had a rare opportunity to experience what it is like to look after an elderly person.

I have not been writing about this because I felt that it was a bit too personal information for my partner, Loren. This time, I asked him if it would be all right to write about it, and he said, "No problem." For the past five years for Loren and three and half years for me, we took care of his grandmother. She is 84 years old and has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease for the past 13 years. As of today, there is no cure for this disease, so she has been taking medications at certain times every day for the past 13 years in order to cope with muscle rigidity, tremor, and a slowing of physical movement.

Grandma was living in a house by herself after her husband passed away, but she started to fall in the house. It signaled family members that she should not be living by herself. Loren, living in Hawaii at that time, suggested that she move to Hawaii and live with him. It must have been a big move for her, moving to a totally new place (different cultural background) where she knew no one but Loren.

When she first moved to Maui, she was able to walk, cook meals, and do laundry. I remember when I started to see Loren, whenever I visited him, she made soup for me. However, as times passed, she started to lose that independence due to her physical condition. She used to stay home by herself while Loren was working and take medications at the right time, but she started to forget to take medications. Loren started to hire caregivers. In the beginning, a caregiver came and helped Grandma from 9 am to 1 pm for three days per week. Loren and I tried to finish up our work and tried to come home as soon as we could and cook dinner quickly and eat by 6:30 (if it's too late, Grandma could not sleep well because food sat in her stomach). After awhile, Grandma could not stay by herself from 1 pm to 6 pm. Her dementia also started to be apparent. Loren could not help but to have a caregiver from 8 am to 6 pm every day. It was about two years ago. We hired 3 caregivers, and they came at different times and days. Managing them became my job. Until then, I had not had much experience of managing people, especially telling someone older than me what to do. Communicating what I need them to do clearly and pointing out to some of the jobs that they are not doing correctly was something I struggled with. It was a very good opportunity to acquire new skills, though. It was a difficult task to find good caregivers. Loren and I interviewed many people. There have been people who did not last long, did not get along with Grandma, and did not perform professionally. Eventually, about a year ago, we settled down with 3 caregivers who had strengths in different skill settings. We assigned them jobs that make the most of their strengths.

We lived in the house that Loren's uncle (Grandma's son) used to own. He was the only uncle to Loren and was the only son to Grandma. But he did not wake up one morning for an unknown reason. Grandma might have felt protected by or close to him by living in this house.

Loren and I felt safe to go to work knowing that someone is there to watch Grandma. Of course, we did not leave the house before 8 am and came home by 6 pm. If we went out after 6 pm, we arranged a caregiver to stay with Grandma in advance. Things seemed to settle down at least for awhile, but it changed dramatically. Eventually, the financial resources to pay for caregivers run out. After long thoughts, Loren decided to place Grandma in a nursing home. During this time, it was heartbreaking for me to see Loren going through this. He wanted to watch Grandma at home until the end.

In the beginning of this year, Loren planned to break the news to her. We discussed and explored what the best way to tell her in the least shocking way was. One day, while I was away, Loren had moment to think, "Now is the time!" so he did. Loren expected her to cry, but instead, she solemnly told Loren, "Loren, I have been through a lot in my life, so I can handle this. If God wants me to move there, then I will." It was Loren who cried after he heard this. It was me who cried after I heard this from Loren. I think that my tears had different feelings in them: feelings of sadness that I would not see Grandma here anymore and feelings of empathy for Grandma of hearing this news. And I cried because I saw beauty in Grandma’s ability to deal with the news through the grace of God that only life time of experience could provide.

---------------------------------- Japanese ---------------------------

Wearing Grandma's Love

Loren's Grandma has sewn this white shirt and white skirt for me.
She is 84 years old and has been living with the Parkinson's disease for a long time. She cannot help to shake, and her fingers and hands changed their shapes due to arthritis. Yet, she made these for me.

Almost every day until they were done, she told me, "Come here." Thinking in my head, "Oh no, again..." but I was actually happy and appreciative. We repeated majoring parts of my body again and again. Towards the bottom of the skirt, it has a pink trim, and it's so cute. When I wear it, it makes me feel pure and feathery. She calls me, "That's my dolly."

A long time ago, Grandma wanted to be a seamstress, but she could not go to a school for that because her parents did not agree. So she self taught. She told me that she used to sew every night when her husband was working (he was a police officer, and he had to do a patrol at night).

Loren took this picture when I was being excited to wear it for the first time in Grandma's room.

Praxis Tests

I am living a life that has been far away from my blog.
How are you doing?
The year of 2008 has entered its third month.
Spring is approaching.
I hope you will have a wonderful season in which you can feel new breeze and overwhelming joy that cannot be held inside of you.

There are several reasons why my blog has been "abandoned" for awhile. But as I try to write all of them or some of them, I don't quite feel "right" yet. So I am just waiting until these things will tell me, "Now, you can write about us." Actually, the reality is that there is not really a moment to think, "All right, I am going to write a blog today."

Meanwhile, today, I felt a slight urge to write, so I am going along with that, though there is nothing special to write about.

Well, I am studying for Praxis tests that I am going to take this coming Saturday. The test will be held from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm (long day!) I hope I will wake up and won't be late.

This Praxis tests are required to take in order to get a teaching license. Even if you attain a four-year degree in education, you won't be hired at public schools without passing them. They are important. Interestingly, the testing date overlapped with this intense period of time. I barely made myself ready for the testing. At this point, there is not much I can do, so I would suggest myself to relax and enjoy. I will just do my best, and all the rest will find their way around. According to my dad, he used to play a day before his test instead of studying. In this way, he could relax his mind, body, and feelings, so that he could do well on the test. And he always passed tests doing this way. I am not as daring as he could be, so I will be probably going over my notes, making sure I got pencils and an erase a couple of times and checking my alarm clocks a couple of times a day before my test. Maybe, I hope that I could jump in the ocean for even five minutes... (I have not been to the ocean for a month and half. Does this tell you how busy I am? :)

Oh well, life is too short to be overwhelmed. I better enjoy it. Good luck to myself and all the people who are taking the tests.

What was the Previous Post about?

I imagine that a lot of you thought, "What is she talking about?" when you read my previous posting titled, "“How do you plan to use the Microsoft products to enhance your productivity?”

About three months ago, my computer started to act strangely, and after countless trials to fix the problem, a customer service center at DELL and I had to give up. We came to a conclusion to reset my computer to a day-one status which meant to bring my computer's setting to the way it was when I purchased.

This mean that I had to let go all the softwares I had downloaded in the past two years, such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office. I could easily let go of Adobe Photoshop since I did not use it so often as well as other "free" softwares such as Google Earth, Skype, Adobe Reader, printer drivers, Mozilla Firefox, and iTunes because I could download and install them again. The saddest part of all was to give up on Microsoft Office. Without it, I cannot use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, and other useful features that I often use for my work and college assignments.

However, quickly, I found Microsoft Office 2007 Trial. I downloaded it and installed it, and I had about 60 days to use it for free. I loved using Microsoft Office 2007 Professional. It is the most recent version of the Microsoft Office system, and many features were improved, and it was easy to work with.

About a week ago, the trial expired. Since I have been very busy, I totally forgot that it was going to expire, so the day when it expired, I desperately looked for an alternative. I tried to download OpenOffice.org which is an office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. It supports the OpenDocument standard for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office '97-2003 formats, among many others. But for some reason, it did not work out. Then, as I researched on the Internet, I found out about CostCaptain.com which provides Microsoft Office softwares at student-friendly prices. For example, you can buy Microsoft Office 2007 Professional at $179.99 with shipping at CostCapitan.com whereas you will have to pay $499.95 at Microsoft's Official website.

I decided to go with CostCaptain.com, and I ordered one, and it lets you install on two computers or on one computer twice (in case your computer crashes). I thought that it was a pretty good price although anything more than $100 is a lot to me at this point of my life as a student. Well, necessity knows no law, right?

As I purchased one, there was a way to save $10 from your purchase. All you had to do was to write how you are planning to enhance your productivity with Microsoft products on your blog. If you are lucky, you could even win an iPod nano or Apple iPhone. So, I did. So, you can now see why I was all of sudden talking about Microsoft products on my blog.

Ironically, the next day, I found out that University of Hawaii sells Microsoft Office 2007 Professional at a half price ($89.99). Well, their products allows you to install only once, so actually, UH and CostCaptain.com are selling it at the same price. But, I did not know if I really needed to have two opportunities. And, again, it makes a big difference financially to pay $180 or $90, so I canceled the order I placed at CostCaptain.com and went ahead and got myself UH's product. CostCaptain's services were very nice, and they answered my questions promptly and in a kind manner. So, I decided to keep the previous posting to advertise for them. If you are looking for a Microsoft products, I recommend you to buy it from CostCaptain.com, and if you are a UH student and has a student ID number, you may try UH Bookstore.

Anyhow, that's what has been going on :)

CostCaptain.comで一つ注文しました。

何とCostCaptain.comの半額ではありませんか。
